An animation that captures and conveys the essence of a St. Louis roller rink — bringing the vibrant energy of 70s roller disco to life through bold typography and retro-inspired motion.
To convey the unique experience of a specific location through animation. St. Louis Skatium — a roller skating rink — transforms from what initially appears to be an ordinary space into a lively 70s roller disco rink during themed events. The animation was designed to capture this transformation, advertising the venue's events by bringing the nostalgic 70s vibe to life.
The rink had a distinct character: 70s aesthetic, great music, themed nights and events, neon lights, bright colors, and retro vibes. What initially appears to be an ordinary space becomes something entirely different when the lights go down and the events begin. The animation needed to live in that transformation.
Typography and design elements were influenced by the bold, distinctive style of the 70s. Research from period magazines, promotional materials, and online archives guided the selection of fonts and visual language.
Roller rink carpets — with their bright, patterned, kitschy aesthetic — served as a perfect visual backdrop for the predominantly typographic animation, enhancing the retro feel of the piece. The animation successfully encapsulates the vibrant energy of the 70s roller skating era.
